“You need to be like a clear, still pool,” Prudence said as gently as her habitually disapproving mouth would allow.
Vi fought a snicker. “A pool, you say?”
“Yes.” The older woman turned back to stone in the space of a single word. “And most importantly a still pool.”
“Yes, ma’am.” She gave an exaggerated salute and winked at George.
“Vi!” Bonnie hissed, half in reproach and half in amusement. Peter leaned against a bookcase on the other side of the sitting room, but no trace of laughter creased his face.
“Stillness requires balance,” the old woman continued, taking a few brisk strides toward a side table. Her hands came to rest on the back of a small, upholstered chair as her eyes returned to her student. “I want you to bring this to the center of the room and stand on it.”
“Have it your way,” Vi mumbled with an obstinate shrug, then laid her cane aside. “But that doesn’t sound like something a pool would do.”
