I’ll Be Speaking All Weekend Long at TeslaCon 8 Nov. 2-5!

I had a grand old time as an attendee at TeslaCon 7. This year, I’m there as a guest!

The 30 Years of Steampunk exhibit will make its first appearance outside of the Eastern timezone, and it gets bigger and better every time I install it. In addition to the “Make it Supernatural” and “30 Years” lectures, I’ll also be giving two BRAND NEW talks! Download the schedule to find out about all of the awesome programming all weekend long.

Unlike other cons, this event offers as much of an immersive experience as possible. The theme this year is Romania, and I visited Bucharest in 2015 on my way out of Bulgaria. I’ll be taking con-goers on “A Stroll through Bucharest” using my travel photos and stories to help set the mood for the backdrop story.

My other new talk will be about the rise of the adventure story and serialized fiction that hit their heyday in the Steam era.

I can’t wait! And I hope I’ll see you there. Tickets are going fast…

Catch me at “Hallowondrous” in Toledo OH October 14-15

After giving my “30 Years of Steampunk” talk at the International Steampunk Symposium, the fine folks behind OddMall approached me about making another appearance. This will be the first Halloween edition of an event described as “not your grandma’s craft fair,” and I am thrilled to be a part of it!

In addition to the exhibit and its accompanying lecture, I’ll be giving another talk on the things Victorians found frightening. This is different from the “Make it Supernatural” talk I’ve given before, and will focus on the urban legends of Victorian London such as the “Great Garroting Scare.” Jack the Ripper brought the idea of a serial killer into the popular imagination for the first time, and at a time when your reputation meant everything, a doppelganger could spell ruin.

So, come on out to the Seagate Convention Center in Toledo Oct 14-15 to see my talks, check out my merchandise, and enjoy the hallowondrous frivolity for the whole family.

A Beautiful Backlog of Steampunk Goodies Coming your Way

Like many writers, I keep several active notebooks. There’s something bittersweet about scribbling on that final page and declaring the book full. But I closed the cover on my Steampunk convention notebook after a fantastic visit to Steampunk World’s Fair 2017. Then I flipped back through the pages, reminiscing about all of the wonderful seminars and workshops I attended, and I suddenly realized there is a gigantic backlog of material. Almost half an inch of  notes about talks about things from sword fights to the French Revolution are languishing within these pages, but not for long!

Eventually, all of this fabulous content will be posted either on this site or Steampunk Journal. But if you want to get everything I write in one place and before anyone else, become a patron. $1/month gets you “behind the curtain,” and a free ebook of No Rest for the Wicked before it is released July 1. You can also read full chapters before the final ebook is published, 5 chapters are already available! Find out more.

Need a Speaker at your Steampunk Event? I’m Your Gal!

I recently created a page with a list of 30 different talks I can do at Steampunk conventions and other special events. I absolutely LOVE getting up and talking in front of an audience, and I know event organizers are always hungry for content. Sounds like a match made in heaven to me!

I will keep the page updated as I add new topics, and I am also very open to researching a new topic or catering an existing talk to your event’s theme. Feel free to e-mail about appearances at Phoebe @ PhoebeDarqueling.com.
